OKLAHOMA CITY – With tears and pride in their eyes, the Hugo Buffaloes returned home Saturday with the Class 3A State Runner-Up silver trophy.
The state championship game between Hugo and Millwood see-sawed back and forth, much as the Buffaloes’ season has done since the opening tip last November. But the Falcons emerged victorious at the “Big House,” taking a 48-40 win and taking the gold ball.
While the Hugo basketball team came within a few buckets of the school’s first state title since 1995, the bottom line remains: Only one team in all of 3A basketball can claim bragging rights over the 2010 Buffs.
Coach Darnell Shanklin and his players can be forgiven for feeling disappointed in Saturday’s result. But reaching the state finals has proven that this entire team is worthy of respect at the highest level.
“I told the team to remember all the things they’ve done right this year,” Shanklin said after Saturday’s final. “The kids worked hard, and they’ve done everything I asked them to do. I wanted them to have that gold ball.”
From an early-season peak to a mid-year roster shake-up, it has been a roller-coaster ride for these Buffs. “We had a good run early, then we had some (player) turnover,” Shanklin said of the 2009-2010 season. “Bouncing back from that is not easy. But as a result, we became a really close knit team.”
Perhaps it is fitting, then, that no Buffalo scored in double figures in Saturday’s final. It was a true team effort on both ends of the court, as Hugo took an early lead, then let the Falcons race ahead by as much as 10 points before mounting a second-half comeback.
The Buffs were within three points of Millwood in the final minutes, but costly turnovers down the stretch doomed Hugo in the closing moments of the game.
Millwood struck first on free throws with 7:06 in the first quarter, but Hugo got their first lead on a driving layup from Patrick Smith moments later. D.J. Shanklin and Carlos Henderson were crashing the boards, but the Buffs were not connecting on shots and had to rely largely on free throws to take an 8-5 lead after one period of play.
Hugo opened the second quarter committing three quick turnovers, and the Falcons capitalized for a 6-1 run to take an 11-9 lead. Henderson scored his first basket of the game at 4:50 to tie the contest. He also notched several monstrous blocks on the defensive end.
The Buffs kept putting Millwood players at the line, and the Falcon defense easily picked off Hugo’s long, dangerous backcourt passes. Millwood shooters found their stroke and won the quarter 18-6 to take a 23-14 lead into the break.
Henderson opened the second half with two layups and numerous blocked shots, and Hugo cut the Falcon lead to five at 23-18. The Buffs had some trouble with the Millwood full-court pressure, and the Falcons would take a 10-point lead into the final seconds of the third.
Patrick Smith’s three-point possession sparked a late rally by the Buffs. Josh Brown’s steal and layup with 15 seconds cut the lead to six, hen Rakeem Lennox hit two free throws after a hard foul. Hugo trailed 34-30 going into the fourth quarter, outscoring Millwood 16-11 in the third.
Early in the fourth, D.J. Shanklin got to the line for two free throws, and Hugo trailed 34-32 with 6:37 remaining. Millwood’s Kevonta Richardson then hit a jumper to extend the lead, 36-32.
Smith drove inside for two, and the Buffs trailed by a bucket with 4:55 left in the game. Hugo’s offense bogged down, but they kept the pressure on Millwood and only trailed by five with 3:20 to go.
Smith handed off to Henderson down low with 2:55 to go, and Hugo trailed 39-36. But there would be no more field goals for the Hugo Buffaloes. The Falcons hit two more free throws to go up 41-36 and dribbled out 45 seconds of clock before a foul was called.
Robinson hit both from the charity stripe, giving Millwood a dangerous seven point advantage at the 2:01 mark. Seconds later, Michael Ervin’s steal and jumper gave the Falcons a 45-36 lead with 1:10 to go.
Javon Jones tried to save the day, getting fouled on a hard drive to the basket and hitting both free throws (45-38 at 0:32). But Dre Triplett’s emphatic dunk with 19 seconds left pushed the lead back to nine and seemingly sealed the gold ball for Millwood.
Delford Robinson (Millwood) led all scorers with 15 points. Those in the scoring column for Hugo’s first state final game in 15 years:
•    Patrick Smith – 9
•    D. J. Shanklin – 9 (All on free throws)
•    Carlos Henderson – 8
•    Javon Jones – 6
•    Donyale Shanklin – 3
•    Rakeem Lennox – 2
•    Josh Brown – 2
•    Preston Wells - 1

RATTAN — The Lady Buffaloes struggled to come back from a two-run second inning and lost to the Lady Bulldogs 3-2 in the Rattan Festival on Tuesday.
The Lady Bulldogs scored one run on a triple aided by an error in right field. A double to the right center field gap drove in their third run of the game. It would eventually be the winning run despite only being the second inning of the game.
Pitcher Heather Bunn and the Lady Buffs played well holding Valliant scoreless for the rest of the game.
In the third inning, Bunn hit a towering shot to deep left centerfield and rounded first for a sure-bet double. The runner on second did not advance, so Bunn had to backtrack back to first and just made it safely. Despite two runners on base, Hugo didn’t generate any runs in the third.
While two runners were walked, the inning ended with a strikeout and those runners left on base.
In the fifth, Kelsey Raper had a perfect hit right over the thirdbaseman down the third base line for a double. Bunn hit another towering shot to centerfield for a double to drive Raper home and put the Lady Buffs within one run. Two popups later and the Lady Buffs comeback attempt and the game were over.
After the game, Coach Jimmy Wyrick commended catcher Tiara Taylor for insisting on playing through a hurt ankle, despite having to squat all game as a catcher.
Coach Wyrick made one positional change, sending Kylie Ojeda into centerfield in the fourth and bringing Kayla Ainsworth to shortstop.

MOORE — Senor forward D.J. Shanklin and Junior guard Patrick Smith made some huge plays in the fourth quarter to lead Hugo to a 53-49 victory over St. Mary’s in the first round of the Class 3A state basketball playoffs on Thursday.
Hugo’s second half defense was phenomenal as they held St. Mary’s, a team averaging more than 70 point per game, to just five field-goals in the second half.
Down 47-43 with 4:32 seconds left, and the Buffs season ending with a possible loss, Shanklin made a pretty behind the back dribble to break St. Mary’s press and drove to the basket for 2 points. After a St. Mary’s miss, Rakeem Lennox shot a jumper from the elbow. Shanklin grabbed the rebound and was fouled as he put up his shot. He would miss the second free-throw, but after his second miss, he stole the ball back for the Buffaloes. Shanklin passed it to Smith, who gave it right back to him for 2 more points.  That basket gave Hugo their first lead of the game and forced St. Mary’s to call a timeout with 3:52 left in the game.
“He didn’t want the season to end and made plays. He stepped up and put it on his back,” Coach Shanklin said.
St. Mary’s Dalton Newsome hit two free-throws with 1:37 left and a time out was called with Hugo down 1. Smith scored 2 points from under the basket on the ensuing inbounds pass to give Hugo a 1 point lead.
Newsome missed a 3-pointer and Hugo’s Carlos Henderson grabbed the rebound and was fouled right away. Henderson hit one of two free-throws. The next posession, a St. Mary’s jumper bounced off the top of the backboard and Shanklin grabbed the rebound and was also fouled right away. Up 2 points, with a chance to put the game out of reach, Shanklin missed both free-throws. Just like Shanklin earlier, Javon Jones almost stole the ball following the rebound but the ball rolled out of bounds. Retaining posession, St. mary’s called a timeout with 29.5 seconds left to set up their offensive play for a possible game winning shot. They inbounded the ball and got the shot they wanted, but Smith made a big play for the Buffaloes as he blocked the shot right into the arms of Henderson. Henderson caught the ball and threw it back to Smith right away. “It was huge, for our defense to step up again. Patrick made a big play,” Coach Darnell Shanklin said.
Smith would hit a free-throw and then Coach Shanklin called a timeout with 10.4 seconds left to set up his defense. St. Mary’s inbounded the ball and got off a 3-pointer that hit the front of the rim. As both teams scrambled for the rebound, the ball went out of bounds, out on St. Mary’s-Hugo ball. Smith received the inbounds pass and was fouled right away, again hitting a free-throw this time with 2.8 seconds left. Smith hit one free throw to give Hugo a 53-49 lead to end the game.
As Smith was shooting his final free-throw, D.J. Shanklin and Henderson could both be seen smiling as they lined up along the stripe. The two seniors were enjoying the moment, Hugo’s first win in the state playoffs since 1995.
The Buffs spent the rest of the day Thursday scouting opponents and watching Broken Bow play in Edmond. After a good night’s rest in a hotel, they will go over their gameplan in a meeting room before taking on defending state champion Cascia Hall at 6 p.m. in Moore.
D.J. Shanklin led Hugo with 15 points while Josh Brown added 8. Smith and Jones both had 7 points while Henderson and Donyale Shanklin each had 5. Rakeem Lennox had 4 points and Preston Wells added a couple.
In reference to the balanced scoring, Coach Shanklin said, “we had a lot of people contribute. It was about the team. It’s been that way all-season long and it’s paying off for us.”
Cascia Hall is led by a 6 foot 10 inch center that will have to be the focus of Hugo’s defense in their matchup. Henderson is 6 foot 8 inches tall and Hugo should be able to put some size on the floor to matchup with them. Another option would be for Hugo to use their tremendous team speed and just outrun their opponent. It will be a difficult game for the Buffs but still a game they can win.
