The game of football begins up front with a team's offensive line.

"Games are won and lost in the trenches," is the common saying.

If games are won and lost there, Hugo coach Terry Shamley expects to win more games this year, after his offensive line returns stronger than last season.

"Last year, we had two guys on the line who benched 135 pounds," Shamley said.  "This year everyone on that line is closer to 300 on the bench, so just on that evaluation, we gotta be stronger.

"Our offensive line will be one of our strengths."

Shamley added that returning four starters from last season will also help.  Steven Lee, Reed Wallace, Jadalen King and DeShante Browner return for the Buffaloes, with Jacob Wallace the early leader to earn the fifth starting spot on the line.

When a team has a quarterback competition, they often look to the wide receivers to make the quarterbacks look good.

The Buffaloes are no different, and the receivers are more than holding up their end of the bargain.

During every drill, they’re running routes, trying to shed defensive backs, and catching nearly every thing thrown their way.

“That’s why we have the receivers that we have out there, because they catch well,” head coach Terry Shamley said.  “That’s even a factor in how we’re going to run our offense, because we think that’s one of the strengths to our ball club is our wide outs.  They’re big, they’re fast and they catch well.”

For the third year in a row, the Rattan Lady Rams are the 3A slow-pitch softball champions.

The Lady Rams cruised to easy wins in the first two rounds of the tournament, and looked well on their way to another win in the state tile.  Apache had other plans.

Trailing 4-1, Apache strung together a couple of singles to cut the deficit to 4-3.  A throwing error tied it at four.  For Rattan though, the game was just beginning.

In the top of the seventh the first two Lady Ram hitters were retired and then the bats came to life.  The next five hitters Rattan sent to the plate reached on either a single or a walk.  Catcher Kenya Griffith stepped to the plate with two runners on and blooped a ball that landed just fair in right.  By the time Apache right fielder Tatum Base corralled it off the side wall, Griffin was at home with an inside the park homerun.  The Lady Rams weren’t done after that.

The next batter, Kaci Watts lifted a 1-0 pitch into left field that rolled all the way to the wall.  By the time Apache fielders reached the ball, she was past second and en route to Rattan’s second consecutive inside the park home run.  Apache stood one out away from going to the bottom of the seventh tied at four, instead Rattan held an 11-4 lead.

Apache put two runners across in the bottom of the seventh, but Rattan would not be denied their third straight title.  When second baseman Ashton Birchfield flipped a ground ball off the bat of Kylie Zenobi to shortstop Rachel Birchfield at second, Rattan was state champs, winning 11-6.

The girls dog piled in the infield to celebrate, and then received their trophies and will return to Rattan with another championship trophy.

The popular saying is that defense wins championships.

Hugo football coach Terry Shamley has been working tirelessly on improving the Buffaloes' defense during spring practice.

The Buffaloes gave up 36.1 points per game last season, but coach Shamley believes that their new 4-3 scheme will help them lower that point total next season because it's a better fit for his team.

"It gives us an extra lineman and one less linebacker and it brings in a secondary guy," he said.

Last year's 3-4 scheme often left the Buffaloes with smaller defenders on the field, but Shamley says the new scheme will give them bigger and better athletes on the field in 2013.

After half an inning, things looked bleak for the Soper Lady Red Bears.

They were down 8-0 before they came to bat and pitcher Ashlyn Finch was struggling to control her pitches on a windy afternoon in Oklahoma City.

The Lady Red Bears could have quit, but they chose to fight, and it paid off big in their eight inning, 19-18 win over Pond Creek in the state quarterfinals.

Finch was able to settle down and adjust to the wind after three innings.  Pond Creek scored 13 of their 18 runs in the first three innings.  From the fourth inning on, Finch knew how to pitch in the windy conditions and limited the damage.

The Lady Red Bears began chipping away at the lead early, scoring one run in the first, five in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth.

The fifth inning saw them take control of the game.  The Lady Red Bears sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs.

They maintained the lead until the seventh inning.  They entered with an 18-15 lead when Pond Creek rallied for three runs to keep their season alive.

When the Lady Red Bears came to bat in the bottom of the eighth, the score was still tied at 18, until Finch stepped in.  With two outs and two on, Finch knocked a base hit into center field, scoring Shea Phillips.

When Finch found her groove on the mound, she kept her team in the game.  When she came to bat in the eighth, she kept their season going.
