The Hugo Buffaloes traveled to Eufaula to take on the Ironheads in their last road test.

The defense looked shaky from the beginning, with Eufaula taking the ball to the end zone on the opening drive.

The score made it 6-0 just 1:43 into the game. It would get uglier, with Hugo falling 54-18 at the final horn.

The Buffalo fans roared back to life 16 seconds later when Trey Johnson erupted on a kickoff . . .

The Buffaloes were unable to put any points on the board Friday night, despite starting two drives deep in Atoka territory. They fell 21-0 to Atoka.

Hugo’s rushing attack was ineffective, with blocks breaking down and Wampus Cat defenders consistently in the backfield.

Only Wilshon McAlester, who picked up 57 yards, had a qualified yards-per-carry average above 2.

Hugo was also ineffective in their limited aerial pursuits, going a combined 1-4 with an interception and 23 yards gained.

Atoka, meanwhile, racked up a balanced 311 yards (178 passing, 133 rushing) and scored three times. Hugo was unable to capitalize on five Wampus Cat turnovers.

Defensively, it was once again Kameron Cooper leading the way for Hugo. The linebacker recorded 14 tackles. Josh Leivas and Jalon Knight each had eight, with Amaney Jackson recording six.

Nick Thain, George Jones, Nick Brown, Reed Wallace, David Bills, Trey Johnson, Lane Wren and Christian Rosales each notched multiple tackles for Hugo.

Knight, Jackson, Brown and Wallace forced fumbles, while Brown also intercepted a pass.

It was Rosales who kept Hugo in the game. The lineman punted eight times and recorded 312 yards of field position. He placed four of those eight inside the 20-yard line.

The Hugo Buffaloes lost the battle on the ground Friday night, giving up more than 200 yards rushing to the Durant Lions and gaining only 30 yards themselves. Durant won the game 49-13.

The story of the game was Durant running back Dakota Diessner, who ran for 198 yards and seven touchdowns on just 13 carries. Diessner carved up the Buff defense with excellent vision and agility.

Conversely, Hugo’s backs found only a wall of defenders when they got the ball. Wilshon McAlester carried eight times for -6 yards. Trey Johnson got the ball five times and found 9 yards. Mike Bean picked up 1 yard on three carries.

The bright spot for Hugo was Dalton Lindsey, who tallied 43 yards rushing on nine carries, despite being sacked three times. Many of his yards came against a Durant second-string defense in the fourth quarter.

Johnson and Lindsey scored the only touchdowns of the night for Hugo.

Lindsey’s 2-yard run in the fourth capped off a six-play, 85-yard drive that saw the Buffaloes get backed up to their own 2 before marching 98 yards to pay dirt.

On first down, McAlester just got back to the line of scrimmage. Second down saw Lindsey sacked back to his own 2-yard line.

Fireworks came on third-and-long, when Lindsey threw a prayer up to David Bills. Bills snagged the pass in stride and ran all the way to the Durant 29-yard line.

Lindsey scampered to the 10 on the next play, then ran to the 2. On second-and-goal, Dalton again used his legs and crossed into the end zone to get the Buffaloes on the board.

Johnson’s touchdown came with less than a minute in the game. From the 16, the sophomore galloped to the 1-yard line. Failing to pound it in on the next play, Johnson made good on a second attempt. Tanner Armor missed the extra point.

Defensively, the Buffaloes had several players record tackles.

Kameron Cooper again led the team with nine tackles.

Nick Thain, Amaney Jackson, Joe Reed, Josh Leivas, Reid Wallace, Collin Houchen, Darrius King and Lane Wren each recorded at least three tackles.

George Jones, Nick Brown, Caleb Carpenter, Dustin Freeman and Brian McClure each chipped in as well.

Hugo will be back in action on Friday when the Stigler Panthers come to visit Gene Nesbit Stadium.

Lady Buffaloes end season with district loss PDF Print E-mail

The fastpitch season for the Hugo Buffaloes softball team came to an end Wednesday with two losses to the Valliant Bulldogs.

With only two teams in the district, the tournament was a simple best-of-three series. Valliant took the first game 10-0 and the second 12-2. Both were decided by the run rule.

Game One was a pitcher’s duel between Bailey Smith and Kirsten Meems. The two ladies retired the side in each of the first three innings. Hannah Robinson reached third base in the second for the Bulldogs, but was thrown out at home on a sloppy play with multiple errors.

The Buffaloes put a runner on in the fourth when Taylor Pence hit a ball to right field, but she stayed stranded there.

Valliant opened things up in the bottom of the fourth with a lead-off home run from Kyler Poche. A few batters later, Hannah Robinson blasted a three-run shot over the center field fence to extend the lead to four.

Hugo coach Teresa Montague swapped pitchers at that point, turning to Sarah Simpson to finish the game. She got the Buffs out of the inning without any further damage.

Hugo failed to respond in the fifth, with Amber Lane, Bailey Smith and Maria Anderson going down in succession.

Valliant got started again in the bottom of the fifth with Poche doubling to center. Hugo’s defense fell apart in the inning, and Valliant cruised to six more runs, including two on errors and the game-winner on a passed ball.

In Game Two, Valliant wasted no time getting on the board. Poche walked, advanced on two passed balls, and scored when Alisha Montez hit a sacrifice grounder to short. Liz Moore also scored on a Hannah Robinson sacrifice.

In the bottom of the third, the Bulldogs kicked the door in.

Robinson hit her second homer of the day, driving in Moore. Several errors, including wild pitches and passed balls, allowed four other Bulldogs to score as well.

Hugo looked to stave off elimination in the fourth, with Bailey Smith driving in Tiara Taylor with a sacrifice. Maria Anderson homered in the spot after Smith, making the score 9-2. Isis Hill managed to reach second base before the Buffaloes ended the inning.

Neither team was able to find the scoreboard again until Valliant closed in on a win in the fifth inning. Shelby Weedhunt drove in two runs on a ground ball into left, and scored herself when Montez hit a drive into left. As Weedhunt crossed the plate, Hugo’s season ended.

The girls will get back to swinging in the spring. The layoff will give Amber Lane and Taylor Pence additional time to recuperate from knee injuries and should allow the Buffs to come back at full strength.

Rattan and Soper clash in regional tournament PDF Print E-mail

One game. That’s all Rattan needs to win for the Lady Rams to take another trip to the state tournament after beating Soper 14-3.

The Rams are defending state champions from slow pitch season.

Thursday, the girls took two big steps toward an opportunity to win it all again.

The team beat Rock Creek 1-0 to advance in the winner’s bracket of the regional tournament. The lone run came on a throwing error by the third baseman.

Soper also advanced, by virtue of a 9-3 win over Wright City.

Kisha Pierce helped out in a big way for the Red Bears in that game. Pierce tripled in two runs in the third and scored herself when the throw to third bounced into the dugout.

Kelsey Songer homered later in the game and the girls from Soper walked away victorious.

The two area powers met in the final game of the evening.

The winner would have to win only once to advance to state. The loser would have to beat Rock Creek, looming after an 11-1 victory over Wright City, and then win two games over the undefeated team to advance.

Jamie Williams and Chelsi Mason, both star pitchers with cannon-like arms, took the circle for the game.

Mason got things started in the top of the first inning with a three-run home run that plated Emily Dennis and Ashlyn Finch.

Rattan answered with a run in the bottom of the frame that came on an error and allowed Lindsey Winship to score.

Soper failed to get the bats going for the rest of the game.

Meanwhile, Rattan’s offense peppered the scoresheet with runs. They had help from Soper’s defense, with physical errors and mental mistakes dooming the Red Bears’ defense.

Winship scored three more times during the game, as did Megan Birchfield.

Jamie Williams, Kaylee Winship and Rachael Birchfield each scored twice. Jadyn Gibbs also added a run for the Rams.

Willams, Gibbs, Kaylee Winship and Brenna House drove in multiple runs. Williams had four RBIs.

Megan Birchfield also drove in a run.

The win gave Rattan the edge heading into Friday’s slate of games.

The Rams need just one win to clinch a berth to state, with Rock Creek and Soper needing to win three straight to make the dream come true.

Rock Creek and Soper face each other at noon Friday with Rattan waiting on the winner.
