Eaglepass wins two more to reach Babe Ruth finals PDF Print E-mail

Strong hitting and steady late-inning relief pitching propelled Eagle Pass into today’s final game of the Southwest Regional Championship for Babe Ruth 13-year-old baseball. They will face Kenner, La., at 6 p.m. at Shull-Bywaters Park.
The South Texas champions won twice on Monday: A 13-3 decision in five innings over Harrison, Ark., and an 11-8 nightcap victory over Abbeville, La. Eagle Pass has now defeated teams from all four states represented in the week-long championship, including Choctaw County’s all-stars.
In the first game, Luis Garcia hit a home run to left field, Jesse Alfaro was credited with a triple, Isaac Banda and Erick Perez had two singles each. Eagle Pass was ahead 5-0 after two innings before a three-run Harrison rally in the fourth. Eagle Pass scored seven in the bottom of the fifth to salt the game away.
That gave them about 30 minutes to prepare for Abbeville, whose first loss was Sunday against Louisiana rivals from Kenner. Starting pitcher Ryan Meaux was pulled after nine pitches and two walks, but both teams struggled early on the mound.
There would be four walks in the first inning, and a Marcus Elizondo single earned him two RBIs and gave Eagle Pass an early 3-0 lead. Abbeville would answer in the second, tying the game at 3-3 after an error and two walks loaded the bases. A balk and a passed ball by reliever Marcus Elizondo brought the runs home for Abbeville.
Eagle Pass would not be denied, scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning. Isaac Banda earned an RBI, and Luis Garcia brought two more home on a single. But the third was a disaster for Eagle Pass defense, as a series of mistakes followed Abbeville’s only hit of the inning to allow five runs to cross.
Juan Elizondo’s triple was followed by a double from Jonathan Villareal to cut Abbeville’s lead to 8-7. But Villareal was tagged out going for third to end the inning.
Eagle Pass defense found new life in their fourth pitcher of the game, Jose Soto. He pitched four innings, throwing six strikeouts while not allowing any hits. Four singles and a balk allowed Eagle Pass to score three in the fourth and take a 10-8 lead for good. Isaac Banda scored again in the sixth for the 11-8 final.
