NORMAN — The Fort Towson Tigers took the first of three final steps toward being crowned state champions by beating Porter 49-44 on Thursday night. The Tigers didn’t play their best as they didn’t take the lead until the fourth quarter, but senior forward Phillip Clark kept them afloat until his teammates found their shooting rhythm. Clark led Fort Towson by scoring 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds— nearly half their points on the evening. “I’m proud of them. We started slow but found a way to win. It’s like I told them earlier- we’re not playing great but they (the players) have a will to win. That’s what gets us through it,” said Fort Towson coach Michael Clay. Tiger star shooter Zack Samaha was held to just 2 points before the fourth quarter, In the fourth, he scored 10 points including a game-tying 3-pointer that propelled Fort Towson to victory. Sophomore Jimmy Smith has returned to the Tigers and provided some invaluable minutes and has also taken the pressure off of Clark. “Smith gives us another scorer so they can’t double Phillip anymore,” Coach Clay said. Shane Acker had 6 points while Cade Clay had a couple.
Friday night’s game Fort Towson plays Garber at 9 p.m. on Friday night in Norman. Should they win, they will play in the championship game on Saturday. Garber entered the state tournament as the favorite to win. Garber has a 6-foot-7 center and a couple guards that make good decisions. On defense, they play a 2-3 zone with the big center in the middle. To beat them, an opponent will have to play good defense, box-out and hit the boards and be able to shoot over their zone. Acker and Clark are tacticians at boxing out and establishing position in the paint. Samaha is an outstanding shooter. Clay and Smith can also shoot the ball well. Coach Clay and the Tigers pride themselves on playing tough defense as well, so Fort Towson has exactly what it would take to beat Garber. Let’s hope they can. Good Luck Tigers!

ANTLERS — The Hugo Buffaloes got to avenge a January loss to the Valliant Bulldogs with a 59- 47 regional victory on Thursday night. Amidst a defensive battle with the score just 32-25 after three quarters, the Buffaloes scored 18 points in the third, continued their own stellar defensive play and left Valliant in the dust. D.J. Shanklin scored 6 points in the fourth along with 4 points each by Patrick Smith and Javon Jones. Even when it looked like Valliant had a chance, the Buffs shut them down as Jones, Smith, D.J. Shanklin, and Donyale Shanklin combined for eight steals in the fourth quarter while Carlos Henderson blocked four shots. Smith was outstanding on defense holding Valliant star Jordan Burrell to just 7 points for the night. Burrell is one of the better players in the state and Smith smothered him all game long with his terrific defense. D.J. Shanklin led the Buffaloes with 16 points while Smith added 10. Jones, Donyale Shanklin and Brown had 8,7 and 6 points respectively while Henderson and Rakeem Lennox each had 4. The Hugo boys play next at 8 p.m. on Saturday in Stigler for the regional championship. |

The Hugo boys game was eerily similar as they too, struggled to get much offense going in the first half, but were led by their stars in the second half to pull out a 46-32 victory and be crowned district champions as well. D.J. Shanklin scored 6 of 8 Buffalo points in the third quarter and the game was tied 28-28. That’s not enough scoring for a playoff game. Coach Darnell Shanklin and the Buffaloes seemed to recognize this and came out like a team on a mission in the fourth qarter. D.J. was in the post, for a change, and hit two free-throws after he was fouled by Antlers’ 6 foot 8 inch center. Javon Jones took off for a fast break bucket then D.J. hurried down the court for two more fast break points. Fellow 6 foot 8 inch center Carlos Henderson of Hugo carried the Buffs on his back in the final three minutes. He scored 8 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots to close out the game and clinch the victory. Rakeem Lennox made a beautiful play when he saved the ball and threw it behind his back to Henderson for an unexpectedly easy basket. D.J. led the Buffaloes with 22 points while Henderson added 15. Jones had 5 points to go with 2 apiece from Preston Wells and Patrick Smith. |

ANTLERS — The Hugo Lady Buffaloes broke open their regional matchup against Wilburton with an excellent team effort late in the third quarter to win by a score of 65-59. Down 33-38 with 2:46 left in the third quarter, Kriss Holiday scored 2 for Hugo, then Shanice Holman stole the ball twice for four more points taking the lead in a span of 12 seconds. As the quarter closed, Holman drove for 2 more. Ashlyn Stafford blocked a shot, threw the ball to Holman who used her speed to race past everyone for 2 more. Stafford blocked another shot and this time Wykeena King was rushing up the court for an easy bucket. With 11 seconds left, Stafford found Holiday down low for 2 more. Heather Bunn stole the ball at half-court, passed to Stafford who scored with 1 second remaining. The fourth quarter was much of the same as the Lady Buffs were just too fast for Wilburton and outhustled them to keep their lead and seal the game. King, Holiday and Holman combined to grab six steals in the final quarter. Holman led Hugo with 27 points while King added 17. Stafford and Bunn each had 9 to go with Holiday’s 3. The Hugo girls play at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at Stigler for the regional championship.

HUGO — The Hugo Lady Buffaloes struggled against a good Antlers team and then came together late to pull out a 52-41 victory and be crowned district champions. Hugo star shooting guard Ashlyn Stafford only took two shots in the first half and scored her first point on a free-throw with 17 seconds left in the half. The rest of the Lady Buffs traded baskets with Antlers to keep the game close as they headed into halftime down 18-19. The third quarter began with a 3-pointer by Amikka Dillard and then Antlers matched it with a 3-pointer of their own. Shanice Holman scored on an inbounds pass and those would be the only points in a turnover filled first few minutes of the third quarter. With 4:38 left in the third, Stafford was fouled shooting a 4-foot jumper. She hit both free throws and the Lady Buffs were suddenly back in sync. Wykeena King was strong in the post and followed her own miss with two points of her own. After a timeout, Stafford dove for a loose ball and Hugo’s coach, Chris Scott, called another timeout just 10 seconds later in order to secure posession. Holman drove for two points. Stafford grabbed a rebound and went the length of the floor scoring 3 points in an “and one” situation. Antlers would not score again until there was a minute left in the quarter. Hugo was up 32-26 at the end of the third. In the fourth, Heather Bunn hit King with a nice pass for an easy bucket. King would grab a rebound and take it all the way up the court dishing to Dillard at the last minute for another easy 2 points. Next posession King stole the ball and followed her own shot for 2 more. With 4:47 left Stafford hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put the Lady Buffs up 41-32. That 3 ended any hopes Antlers had of coming back and sealed the win for the Lady Buffs. King led Hugo with 17 points while Holman added 14. Stafford had 9 points to go along with 5 points for each Dillard and Bunn. Kriss Holiday also had a bucket.
