Kenner advances to Babe Ruth finals with midnight win

By Zach Maxwell
Contributing Writer

At the end of the day - literally - the Kenner Eagles would not be
denied. The Louisiana champions pulled off a 12-2 victory over Eagle
Pass at two minutes to 12 Tuesday night.
Harry Chairs pitched his second complete game of this championship
series, locking up the MVP award. Kenner was crowned Babe Ruth
Baseball's Southwest Regional Champion, and they will move on to the
league finals in two weeks in Levelland, Texas.
As midnight chimed, the Kenner players piled atop Jeff Fernandez, who
scored the winning run on a wild pitch. The Eagles doused Coach Conrad
Berniard with cold water, marched to the center field fence and paraded
back to the infield carrying the Louisiana state flag.
Announcer Barry Diamond, who pleased crowds all week long with
musical interludes and player introductions, introduced both teams once
more in a postgame ceremony. This time, he was calling out the names of
the regional champion Kenner team and runners-up from Eagle Pass.
Tournament Director Allen Turner complimented both teams for their
"heart, determination and resilience." He presented a special
sportsmanship trophy to the Eagle Pass team. Local Director William
Smith and volunteer Christy Ray handed out trophies to each player and
the coaches.
Smith also introduced the winner of Hugo Athletic Booster Club's
$5,000 giveaway. Hannah Stockton of Fort Towson was the winner, and she
stayed late to pose for pictures with the Kenner team.
Proceeds from the contest, which began with ticket sales in May, will
benefit Hugo High School athletics. Proceeds from Hugo's hosting of the
Babe Ruth event will benefit a variety of civic clubs and efforts. A
legion of volunteers, including scorekeepers Stan Payne, Stan Self and
Charlie Bob Wibben, several youths serving on the "bat crew," the
Protest Committee, host parents and many others, were applauded for
their efforts.
The second game of Tuesday's final series started close to 10 p.m.
after Eagle Pass' stunning 17-16 comeback earlier in the evening. Kenner
got all they would need in the first inning. Max Pancamo's double and a
single from Chandler Patten were the only hits, as fatigue set in for
the embattled Eagle Pass team.
They used two pitchers but still gave up four of Kenner's five first
inning runs on errors and wild pitches.
The third inning was a clinic on how to play defense at shortstop.
Marcus Elizondo got a base on balls, but was caught off guard when a pop
fly by Carmelo Casas was caught by Kenner's Ashanti Wheatley. He threw
to first and just beat a sliding Elizondo for the double play.
Moments later, with Chandler Patten on first after a walk, Kenner's
Zack Ward hit into a perfectly executed 6-4-3 double play scooped up by
Eagle Pass shortstop Jesse Alfaro.
The Kenner defense committed three errors in the fourth, allowing
Eagle Pass to score twice and cut the lead to 5-2. Isaac Banda's triple
was good for one of the two RBIs. In the bottom half, Kenner got an
insurance run when Daniel Perrin scored on a Max Pancamo ground out.
Jose Soto took the mound in the fifth, fresh off his Monday heroics
which helped Eagle Pass reach the finals. Ben Hess and Zack Ward hit
singles, with Ward's bringing Hess home for the 7-2 lead. The rest was
downhill as the defense collapsed, and Kenner led 10-2 when Eric Perez
was brought in to pitch with the game winning run on base.
Chairs was intentionally walked, loading the bases. With Ben Hess
back up for his second at-bat of the inning, Perez threw back to back
wild pitches which brought in the 11th and 12th runs for the five-inning
run-rule win.

Eagle Pass 17 Kenner 16

After three fielding errors, saw Eagle Pass’ 5-4 lead turn into a 7-5 deficit, the Eagle Pass coaches made a joint decision to switch pitchers. That proved to be a dreadful mistake as Kenner rocked the next two pitchers. By the time, Eagle Pass’ fourth pitcher of the inning entered the game, Kenner had scored 11 runs for a commanding 15-5 lead.
Sergio Morales came in and struck out the first batter he faced. He balked amidst the next at bat and it seemed as though Eagle Pass was going to allow even more runs on errors. Instead he stood on the mound waving his arms motioning toward the catcher. The catcher noticed his gesture and fired the ball to second base where they caught a Kenner baserunner busy celebrating their lead with his foot off the bag.
Morales’ impressive determination was the key to Eagle Pass’ victory. It began in the fourth and carried over throughout the rest of the game as he held Kenner to just a single run. That run came when a coverage error left a gaping hole between first and second base.
When he got his chance to bat in the fourth, Morales smashed one to left center-field that bounced over the fence for a ground rule double. Isaac Bender (the first pitcher) hit a triple to center field to drive in two runs. Eagle Pass stole home on a passed ball and suddenly Kenner’s imposing 15-5 lead was 15-8 and the momentum clearly shifted Eagle Pass’ way.
Morales drove in another run in the fifth as part of a four run onslaught of outstanding base-running. Eagle Pass’ coaches sent runners every chance they could get.
Kenner finally showed some spark in the bottom of the sixth when Benjamin Hess drove in the aforementioned run.
However, in the bottom of the sixth (guess who) Morales hit a hard shot to left field that drove in two runs to cut Kenner’s lead to 16-14. An RBI grounder up the middle and a steal home and Eagle Pass had overcome. It was now tied in the bottom of the sixth. Their burly slugger, Luis Garcia, was up at bat with two runners on. Garcia smashed a grounder toward Kenner’s shortstop who could only bat it down and hope to make a play after recovering. While it was a fine play just to bat the hard hit down, Eagle Pass had scored to win the game.
Morales went through the final three batters 1, 2, 3 in the seventh.

Home team gives their all in two Babe Ruth losses

By Zach Maxwell
Contributing Writer

The Oklahoma Southeast All-Stars from Choctaw County gave one Arkansas team quite a scare Friday before falling 11-9 in the Babe Ruth baseball Southwest Regional Championship. The host team then dropped a 14-1 decision against Eagle Pass, Texas, on Saturday.
Team Manager Chad Austin was proud of the effort given by his Oklahoma Southeast squad under extreme conditions including heat, seasoned opponents and scheduling.
“They showed a lot of character and heart. Our best bet would have been to pull out that first game,” Austin said Saturday after the loss to Eagle Pass. “We had to come back and play early, still fatigued. They were a better opponent, it was hot; it was not a good situation for us Saturday.”
The Southeast All-Stars lineup included players from Hugo, Soper, Fort Towson and Rattan. Austin, who coaches baseball at Boswell Schools, credited the family of Chad Jones of Hugo for offering an abundance of coaching and organizational assistance.
“We had some parents that really helped a lot, supported us, and helped organize to make this thing happen,” Austin said. “I’ve played in three Babe Ruth tournaments, this is my first to coach. It’s really a neat experience for these kids. They make it fun for the kids and parents, with the banquet and opening ceremonies.”
But after last Thursday night’s banquet and Friday’s ceremony, it was time to get down to the business of baseball. The Southeast squad hosted the “Northark” champions from Harrison, Ark., in the fourth and final game of opening day.
Starting pitcher Colton Hobgood weathered a dismal start for the home team, as the Southeast defense committed five errors, allowing Harrison a 6-0 first inning start. Hobgood earned strikeouts on all three outs of the second inning, but an error and a base hit for Baker Wilson put the Arkansas team on top 7-0.
Harrison brought in Jackson Murray to pitch the second, and the middle of the Southeast lineup went on a hit parade. Hobgood started the inning with a double, followed by run scoring two-baggers from Nigel Smith and Trace Satterfield. McKenna Pierce bunted his way on base, getting runners on the corners with no outs.
Pierce was then caught in a run-down while Satterfield came home to make the score 7-3 in favor of Arkansas. Hayden Farmer’s ground out gave the hosts two outs and the rally seemed snuffed out.
Then Tyler McAdams was hit by a pitch and Oklahoma Southeast was back in business. Jordan Jones doubled, and Dalton Maxwell reached base on an Arkansas error, scoring McAdams. Jones then scored while Maxwell kept the infielders busy on another run-down. Suddenly, Southeast trailed only 7-5.
After the rally, the Southeast defense perked up. They retired the side on a ground out, a sliding catch in left field by McAdams, and a strikeout for Hobgood. At the plate, Hobgood’s second hit of the game was followed by a tripled from Satterfield. A base hit from Tyler Anderson brought Satterfield home to tie the game at 7-7.
In the fourth, Harrison put the bats to work, scoring three runs on four hits. Southeast committed no errors in the inning as the defense settled in and made heads-up plays. But there would be no fourth-inning rally for the home team: Nathan Thompson reached second base on a Harrison error but was tagged out on a run-down between bases.
Southeast’s next scoring threat came in the fifth. Harrison’s Todd Davis walked five batters, eventually allowing lead-off hitter Nigel Smith to score. The only hit of the inning, a single for McKenna Pierce, was negated when he was picked off at first. Harrison’s fourth pitcher of the game, Hunter Humphreys, struck out Dalton Maxwell to get out of a bases-loaded jam with a 10-8 lead.
Arkansas added another run in the sixth before Southeast reliever Nigel Smith took the mound. Southeast mounted a two-out rally when Pierce’s single brought Hobgood home to cut the Arkansas lead to 11-9. Once again Harrison pitching allowed three walks to load the bases, but a ground out by McAdams ended the rally.
There would be no seventh inning heroics for Oklahoma Southeast. Dalton Maxwell reached base on balls and stole second, but a long ground out by Thompson moved him to third with two outs. Hobgood lined out to end the game.
The loss put Oklahoma Southeast in the early bracket Saturday against Eagle Pass. The 2 p.m. turnaround meant the host team had to play just 15.5 hours after their Friday night loss, under a heat advisory with cloudless skies.
Eagle Pass scored six in the first and four in the second, taking care of business early in a 14-1, five inning affair. Nathan Thompson started the game for the Southeast All-Stars, but Nigel Smith was brought in after the defense only recorded one out while allowing four runs.
Maxwell, Thompson  and Smith recorded singles in the first two innings, but Eagle Pass starter Juan Elizondo notched four K’s to smother any chances of a rally. Southeast’s third pitcher, McKenna Pierce, earned one run on two hits with a strikeout in the third. He got all three Eagle Pass hitters out in the fourth with the defense behind him.
The only scoring play for Southeast came in the bottom of the third. A Jordan Jones single was followed by a two out triple from Thompson. Jones scored, making the tally 11-1 in favor of Eagle Pass. Trace Satterfield had a scoring opportunity in the fourth, but was tagged out at home after singles from Tyler Anderson and Brayden Cox.
Sergio Morales of Eagle Pass got 2 RBIs in the fifth on an in-the-park “home run” credited to a pair of Southeast fielding errors. The visitors scored three in the fifth to make the final 14-1.
