By Brian Moore ANTLERS — The Hugo Buffaloes got to avenge a January loss to the Valliant Bulldogs with a 59- 47 regional victory on Thursday night. Amidst a defensive battle with the score just 32-25 after three quarters, the Buffaloes scored 18 points in the third, continued their own stellar defensive play and left Valliant in the dust. D.J. Shanklin scored 6 points in the fourth along with 4 points each by Patrick Smith and Javon Jones. Even when it looked like Valliant had a chance, the Buffs shut them down as Jones, Smith, D.J. Shanklin, and Donyale Shanklin combined for eight steals in the fourth quarter while Carlos Henderson blocked four shots. Smith was outstanding on defense holding Valliant star Jordan Burrell to just 7 points for the night. Burrell is one of the better players in the state and Smith smothered him all game long with his terrific defense. D.J. Shanklin led the Buffaloes with 16 points while Smith added 10. Jones, Donyale Shanklin and Brown had 8,7 and 6 points respectively while Henderson and Rakeem Lennox each had 4. The Hugo boys play next at 8 p.m. on Saturday in Stigler for the regional championship. |
