By Brian Moore MUSKOGEE — The Hugo Buffaloes are headed to states after a 40-38 win over Keys in the area playoffs on Friday. Eleven ticks on the clock and a 3 point lead prompted Hugo coach Darnell Shanklin to make a wise decision— foul on purpose. Keys could hit a 3-pointer and tie the game, but fouling them would at most lead to 2 points, as it did. Sophomore Donyale Shanklin was consequently fouled by Keys and would hit one of two free-throws to ice the game and give Hugo the final 2 point lead. “That was a lot of pressure for a sophomore to have and he came through for us,” Coach Shanklin said. In the fourth quarter, Keys tried to take the lead with one-and-one fouls but Javon Jones and Donyale Shanklin hit their free-throws to foil Keys’ plan. “Free throws were very important down the stretch. Those two hit some big ones,” Coach Shanklin said. Donyale Shanklin led the Buffs with 12 points while his brother, D.J. Shanklin, had 10. Josh Brown, Carlos Henderson and Rakeem Lennox had 6,4 and 3 points respectively. Patrick Smith and Javon Jones each had while Preston Wells added another. Hugo’s first round state playoffs matchup is 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at Moore High School versus St. Mary’s of Oklahoma City. |
